Alpha-lipoic acid, the universal antioxidant, consists of two different forms, x9cRx9d and x9cS,x9d which have different properties. The x9cRx9d form is the biologically active component (native to the body) that is responsible for lipoic acidx99s phenomenal antioxidant effect. The x9cSx9d form is not very biologically active. Alpha-lipoic acid supplements typically consist of the x9cRx9d and x9cSx9d form in a 50/50 ratio.
